COLONISING NSW: PERSPECTIVES

A Wideview Public School Library pathfinder project

Getting the MOST out of your information knowledge

Purpose

This is a pathfinder website. That means it is designed to support and extend your ability to locate and use quality information from the internet.

Overview

You will use your knowledge of website credibility to accurately locate and use information relating to the colonisation of New South Wales in 1788.

The tasks on this pathfinder website consolidate the Information Literacy work you have previously completed in the library. It focuses on researching and making sense of information from various web-based sources.

NSW syllabus

The pathfinder aligns with the following outcomes:

A student

  • describes people, events and actions related to world exploration and its effects HT2‑3
  • describes and explains effects of British colonisation in Australia HT2‑4
  • applies skills of historical inquiry and communication HT2‑5

In particular the pathfinder helps students:

  • describe the establishment of the British colony at Port Jackson
  • using a range of sources, investigate the everyday life of ONE of the following who sailed on the First Fleet and lived in the early colony: a soldier, convict, ex-convict, official
  • use sources to identify different perspectives on the arrival of the British to Australia

How to use the PATHFINDER

This website should be used in conjunction with your Google Library Classroom. You need to log into your Google Library Classroom to locate the Colony Solutions sheet. Students' answers to questions on this pathfinder are added to that sheet. As a task is completed on the pathfinder and the answers are completed, the solutions sheet should be turned in.

On the pathfinder website you will find several tabs containing tasks. Complete tasks in the order they appear in each tab because your knowledge will build with each task.
